January 4th - World Braille Day
World Braille Day is a significant event, to raise awareness about the ongoing need for support and resources for people with visual impairment. It is also a day to celebrate the life and work of Louis Braille - the inventor of the Braille system.
An Introduction to World Braille Day
At Little Thurrock Primary School, we celebrated World Braille Day on the week commencing Monday 8th January - our first week back at school. Each class engaged in a Wolrd Braille Day lesson, which was introduced using the presentation above (please click on the link to view this).
Lessons
Lessons across the school included: writing Braille labels for objects in class; writing our names in Braille, which were created by poking a pencil through the paper (this also had to be done in a mirrored way) and decoding Braille words and sentences.
Displays
Following the lessons, classes displayed their engagement by created Braille displays in and around their classes. Please see examples of these below.
